His trio sonatas give each player their chance to shine with virtuosic melodies to quick, playful exchanges between instruments. Festival Directors Ben Opie and Melissa Doecke bring together some of Melbourne’s finest instrumentalists for this year’s Baroque by Candlelight, joined by Francesco Ciarmatori, Mélissa Tremblay, Giselle Gabriels, Matthew Kneale, Nick Pollock, Vivian Qu and Justice Karol. Together, they explore the richness and spirit of Zelenka’s music in the intimate setting of St John’s. Francesco Ciarmatori is an Italian oboist and composer with a career spanning orchestral and chamber music. A graduate of Bologna’s Conservatorio G. B. Martini, he has performed with the Luigi Cherubini Orchestra under Riccardo Muti and Italy’s National Symphony Orchestra, alongside collaborations with pianist Aura Go and bassoonist Matthew Kneale.

As an accomplished oboist, Mélissa Tremblay currently holds the positions of Principal Oboe in the Orchestre Philharmonique du Québec and the Orchestre symphonique de l’Estuaire, in Canada. She is also on faculty at the Conservatoire de musique de Montréal. Alongside her orchestral and pedagogical duties, Melissa is an active participant in varied freelance engagements and has performed regularly with a variety of ensembles across Canada and America. Having recently relocated to Melbourne Australia, she is enjoying embracing new artistic opportunities and collaborations in Australia.

One thing unifies the body of work brought to life by revolutionary creative thinker, Ben Opie: the poetry of a beautifully curated concept. From representing Australia at Turkey’s Flying Carpet festival to Bach performed from a ten-tonne truck, Opie’s creative thought leadership achieves a meaningful and memorable combination of diversity, access and innovation.

Giselle Gabriels is an Australian oboist who recently returned home after studying in Lausanne, Switzerland, and working at the Estonian National Opera. With experience in orchestral and chamber music, she brings a keen enthusiasm for early music to her performances and is passionate about teaching and nurturing young oboe students.

Melissa Doecke co-directs award-winning Inventi Ensemble and PSMF. A vibrant flautist celebrated for world-class artistry, creativity and versatility, she is sought-after as a chamber musician, mentor and collaborator.

Matthew Kneale is an Australian bassoonist celebrated for his virtuosity, humour and engaging performances. In 2019, he became the first bassoonist awarded the Freedman Classical Fellowship. His varied solo and chamber career includes collaborations with Paavali Jumppanen, Rachael Beesley, Ian Munro and Niels Bijl. He also leads the Australasian Double Reed Society.

Justice Karol is a Melbourne-based harpsichordist studying with Donald Nicolson at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music. A participant in the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra Mentorship Program and Genesis Baroque’s first Emerging Artist, she combines historical performance with an interest in contemporary music and teaches at the Victorian College of the Arts Secondary School.

Nicholas Pollock is an Australian theorbo player specialising in Baroque music and early plucked strings. Principal Theorbo with the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra, he performs with leading ensembles across Australia and internationally. His particular interests include seventeenth-century French repertoire and basso continuo, bringing colour and vitality to historically informed chamber music.

Vivian Qu is a Melbourne-based musician and educator with extensive orchestral and chamber experience. She performs regularly with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and Orchestra Victoria, following appointments with the Macao Orchestra and Shanghai Symphony Orchestra. Alongside her performing career, she is passionate about sharing her experience with the next generation of musicians.
